China is increasingly important for UK business as an export market, and also as a partner for manufacturing, innovation and creative collaborations. There are significant opportunities on offer for British companies in a range of sectors.  

China’s intellectual property (IP) and legal systems are developing quickly and have now reached a level where IP risks for foreign businesses can be mitigated in almost all cases. Getting IP right is crucial if UK companies are to succeed in China. 

Tom Duke – the UK’s IP Attaché to China, based in the British Embassy Beijing – supports over 200 companies each year from across the UK. Tom will return to Manchester for this 3rd annual event on IP in China, hosted by the China Britain Business Council (CBBC). 

Tom will share practical tips to ensure your China venture has the best possible chance of success. Tom will cover:

• The main IP risks of doing business in China and how this affects exports, manufacturing, joint research and other projects. Tom will draw from his work advising British companies and their boards on risk mitigation strategies.
• Research and innovation. Building on previous Manchester events, Tom will update on the latest practical tips for UK-China collaborative research and technology transfer projects.
• Branding and retail. Protecting IP on China’s e-commerce and social network platforms (including giants Alibaba and WeChat), and navigating China’s chaotic trade mark system.
• Creativity and culture. Navigating the IP challenges of China’s censorship and creative industries regulatory system.
